Homework
Homework at Eastern Green Junior School
At Eastern Green Junior School, homework plays an important role in supporting pupils’ learning and reinforcing the knowledge and skills taught in school. We believe that carefully planned homework helps pupils practise key skills, consolidate their understanding and develop the independent learning habits that will support them throughout their education.
Homework is designed to complement and strengthen the curriculum taught in school, particularly in the core areas of reading, spelling and mathematics. By regularly practising these essential skills at home, pupils build fluency, confidence and a deeper understanding of their learning.
We also recognise that strong links between home and school help children succeed. Homework provides an opportunity for parents and carers to engage with their child’s learning and support the development of positive learning routines.
What Homework Looks Like at EGJS
Homework is set weekly in every class and focuses primarily on developing strong foundations in reading, spelling and mathematics.
Reading
Children are expected to read for at least ten minutes, five times each week at home. Pupils are provided with books that are carefully matched to their reading ability so they can practise fluency and comprehension with confidence.
Parents and carers record reading in the child’s reading diary, which is checked weekly by school staff. In addition, pupils have opportunities to read daily in school to further strengthen their reading skills.
Spellings
Pupils complete three spelling activities each week using our online platform Spelling Shed. These activities reinforce the spelling patterns and vocabulary that pupils are learning in class. Spelling homework typically takes around 30 minutes per week.
Mathematics
To support the maths curriculum, pupils practise key maths skills through Mathletics or Times Tables Rockstars. These platforms help pupils develop fluency in number facts and times tables, which are essential for accessing the wider maths curriculum. Maths homework is designed to take approximately one hour per week.
Paper copies of homework are always available for pupils who require them.
Supporting Learning and Independence
Homework at Eastern Green Junior School is designed to:
-
reinforce key knowledge and skills taught in lessons
-
strengthen fluency in reading, spelling and mathematics
-
develop independence and resilience in learning
-
help pupils establish positive study habits for the future
Regular practice helps pupils secure their understanding and build confidence in applying their learning.
Working in Partnership with Parents
We believe that education is most successful when school and families work together.
Parents and carers play an important role in supporting homework by encouraging regular reading, ensuring tasks are completed and helping children develop positive routines for learning at home.
Teachers monitor homework completion through reading diaries and online learning platforms. Feedback on pupils’ progress is shared through marking, parent consultations and school reports.
If homework is not completed at home, pupils will be given time during the school day to complete it so that they still have the opportunity to practise these important skills.
Monitoring and Review
The Headteacher and leadership team regularly review homework provision to ensure that it supports the school curriculum effectively and contributes positively to pupils’ learning and achievement. The views of parents and pupils are also considered as part of this review process.
