Year 5

It’s the start of a new academic year for your child at Eastern Green and, as always, there are new timetables and routines to get used to. The children have made a fantastic start and they have settled into Year 5 with ease. We have been impressed with the children’s learning, attitude, enthusiasm and behaviour.

Year 5 the children will receive two pieces of homework on a Friday, to be completed and returned to school on the following Wednesday unless otherwise instructed. Homework given will usually be one piece of English and one piece of Maths work to complete. All homework will be planned to be a reinforce areas covered in class and should be achievable by all pupils.

Every child has been allocated a reading day where a new target will be set for the following week. We ask that reading books are brought to school everyday so each child can be heard read individually. So far the children have really enjoyed reading to us and telling us about their choice of book.

Library books can be returned, changed and reissued fortnightly.  Year 5’s day is on a Tuesday; our next slot is Tuesday 22nd September.

Multiplication and division facts are an integral part of the Maths curriculum in Year 5. If children know their times tables, up to 12x12, they will be able to tackle more areas of Maths with ease and confidence. Mrs Holt will begin testing the children’s knowledge of tables from week beginning 14th September. We would really appreciate it if they could be practising these at home.

We are teaching spelling lessons in school, introducing/reinforcing spelling rules and practising high frequency words. If we set spelling homework, the children will bring home their (olive green) spelling book. The book will include spelling practise and work from the spelling lesson. There will also be spellings to learn and an explanation of what we are expecting the children to do. Spelling tests will be on a Friday morning. There will be completed in the spelling book so that parents/carers can see how the children have performed and are progressing.

Monday- Indoor PE kit required.

Wednesday- 5MC will be swimming until half term. 5M will be swimming from half term until Christmas.

Thursday- Games: Outdoor PE kit needed. Tracksuits and trainers would be advisable during the colder weather.

Coombe Abbey Visit
To launch our Water topic for this term, Year 5 went to Coombe Abbey to learn all about water, the features of a river and see all aspects of a river in action. We had a brilliant time; just look at the photos...
